The Story & Details
The watcher. The messenger. The guardian of things unseen.
Some carvings are made to sit quietly on a shelf. This one commands the entire room.
Weighing approximately 3kg, this extraordinary Black Obsidian Raven Carving is a substantial statement sculpture, combining the dramatic beauty of volcanic glass with one of the most mysterious and symbolically powerful birds in mythology.
Carved from glossy black Obsidian, the raven stands perched upon a deeply textured base, its enormous curved beak pointing forward and its watchful eyes giving the sculpture an unmistakable presence.
Every angle reveals another layer of detail.
The wings are covered in individually defined feather patterns, the neck displays long flowing carved lines, and the rear reveals an intricate arrangement of overlapping feathers extending down towards the tail.
The highly polished surface catches the light beautifully, revealing subtle reflections across the raven's head, wings and body.
At approximately three kilograms, this is far removed from the small raven carvings more commonly encountered in crystal collections.
Its sheer scale makes it an imposing display piece, while the intricate craftsmanship gives it a remarkable sense of character.
Ancient volcanic glass. A creature of myth and mystery. One formidable guardian.
Black Obsidian: Glass Born from Fire
Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that its atoms cannot organise into a regular crystalline structure.
Unlike minerals such as Quartz or Amethyst, Obsidian is amorphous, meaning it does not possess an ordered crystal lattice.
Its deep black appearance is commonly associated with microscopic mineral particles and the way light interacts with the glass.
Obsidian has been used by human cultures for thousands of years, particularly for creating sharp-edged tools, ceremonial objects and decorative carvings.
Its ability to fracture into exceptionally sharp edges made it an important material in ancient toolmaking traditions.
Today, Black Obsidian remains highly valued for its rich colouring, reflective finish and dramatic appearance when carved into sculptural forms.
This raven showcases those qualities beautifully.
The polished volcanic glass creates an almost liquid-black surface, while the carefully carved feather patterns introduce depth, shadow and texture.
The Raven: Messenger Between Worlds
Few birds occupy such a fascinating place in mythology, folklore and spiritual symbolism as the raven.
Intelligent, adaptable and deeply connected to human storytelling, ravens have appeared as messengers, guardians, tricksters and companions of powerful deities across numerous cultures.
Odin's Ravens: Huginn & Muninn
In Norse mythology, the god Odin is accompanied by two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, whose names are commonly interpreted as Thought and Memory.
According to traditional accounts, they travel across the world gathering knowledge before returning to Odin.
They represent observation, intelligence, remembrance and the pursuit of hidden understanding.
The Morrígan: Sovereignty & Transformation
In Irish mythology, the Morrígan is associated with sovereignty, conflict, prophecy and the changing fortunes of battle.
She is frequently connected with corvid imagery, particularly crows and ravens within later interpretations of her symbolism.
For modern practitioners, the raven can represent the courage to confront uncertainty, recognise personal power and move through periods of transformation.
Ravens in Magical Traditions
Within contemporary witchcraft and spiritual practices, ravens are often associated with intuition, divination, protection and the mysteries of the unseen world.
Their dark plumage, remarkable intelligence and historical connection with prophecy have made them enduring symbols of wisdom and transformation.
This sculpture brings those associations into a striking physical form.
Its watchful posture and commanding size create the impression of a silent guardian observing everything around it.
A Monumental Obsidian Carving
What makes this raven especially remarkable is its scale.
At approximately 3kg, it is a genuinely substantial carving, considerably larger than many decorative crystal ravens.
The sculpture has been carved with impressive attention to detail.
Its elongated beak is sharply defined, while the facial features and layered head feathers give the bird a distinctive expression.
The wings curve naturally around the body, with individually carved feather sections creating a beautiful combination of smooth polished surfaces and textured detailing.
From behind, the feather patterns become particularly striking, forming an almost symmetrical arrangement across the raven's back.
The sculpted base completes the composition, giving the raven a strong, grounded appearance.
This is a piece designed to be admired from every direction.
It would make an exceptional centrepiece for a gothic interior, collector's cabinet, personal altar, library, study or dedicated mineral display.
Traditional Associations
Within contemporary crystal and spiritual traditions, Black Obsidian is commonly associated with:
- Protection & Warding: Traditionally used as a symbolic stone for energetic boundaries and personal protection.
- Grounding: Representing stability, awareness and connection to the physical world.
- Shadow Work: Associated with honest self-reflection and exploring hidden aspects of the self.
- Banishing & Releasing: Symbolising the release of unwanted influences and outdated patterns.
- Transformation: Representing the courage to confront change and move forward.
The raven adds further symbolic associations:
- Intuition & Psychic Work: Symbolising observation, instinct and hidden understanding.
- Wisdom: Associated with knowledge, memory and intelligence.
- Divination: A traditional symbol of prophecy and messages within folklore.
- Guardianship: Representing vigilance, protection and awareness.
- Transformation: Symbolising life's transitions, endings and new beginnings.
Together, Black Obsidian and raven symbolism create a powerful representation of protection, shadow work, wisdom and transformation.
These associations are based on cultural traditions and spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically established therapeutic effects.

Display & Care
Obsidian typically measures approximately 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Although substantial, it is a natural volcanic glass and can chip or fracture if dropped or struck against a hard surface.
Due to the weight of this carving, display it on a stable, level surface capable of safely supporting approximately 3kg.
When moving the sculpture, support the main body and base with both hands rather than lifting it by the beak, head or wings.
Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth to maintain its polished appearance.
Avoid abrasive materials, harsh cleaning products and sudden temperature changes.
