The Story & Details
Dark as midnight. Illuminated from within.
Some stones reveal their beauty immediately. Others wait for the light to find them.
This extraordinary Rainbow Black Moonstone Obelisk is a beautiful example of the latter, combining deep storm-grey and charcoal colouring with delicate silvery veining and flashes of unexpected iridescence.
Weighing approximately 482g, this individually selected specimen has been polished into a striking obelisk, allowing the mineral's natural internal structures to become part of its visual character.
Across its surface, smoky charcoal tones meet pale silver-grey areas, creating intricate patterns that resemble fractured ice, drifting clouds and fine mineral threads suspended within stone.
At first glance, the obelisk appears dark and mysterious. But as the light moves across its polished faces, something remarkable happens.
Hidden flashes of blue, gold, peach, green and other iridescent colours appear amongst the internal features, illuminating small sections of the stone before disappearing as the viewing angle changes.
It's a beautiful contrast. Deep, almost monochromatic colouring interrupted by unexpected bursts of rainbow light.
Hidden Colour Beneath the Surface
The most captivating feature of this obelisk is its natural rainbow flash.
Rather than displaying a continuous, uniform shimmer, the stone reveals individual areas of iridescence that become visible under particular lighting conditions.
Some appear as tiny spectral reflections amongst the pale internal veining, while others produce more pronounced flashes of blue and multicoloured light.
The polished faces of the obelisk allow these features to be appreciated from different angles, with each side revealing its own arrangement of colour, texture and natural mineral structure.
In the supplied photographs, the upper section is particularly striking, with fine reflective features catching the light against the darker stone.
It's a specimen that rewards movement and closer inspection, revealing details that are easy to miss at first glance.
The Character of Black Moonstone
Black Moonstone is a commercial gemstone name commonly applied to dark-coloured feldspar material, often displaying grey, silver and occasionally iridescent optical effects.
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar mineral group and is traditionally associated with an optical phenomenon known as adularescence, which produces a soft, shifting appearance of light within the stone.
Some commercially sold Black Moonstone specimens may also display multicoloured reflections associated with their internal feldspar structures.
This particular obelisk is identified by the supplier as Madagascan Black Moonstone and is notable for its charcoal colouring, pale mineral veining and rainbow-like flashes.
