The Story & Details
Not exactly a shy little creature, is it?
This jasper snake carving is all coils, scales and attitude. Its body twists into a compact, sculptural form, with the head raised and mouth open in a rather convincing warning to anyone getting too close.
The polished stone carries a fascinating mixture of earthy ochre, rusty orange, muted green-grey and brown, with natural markings running across the individually carved scales. The colouring gives the snake an almost weathered appearance, as though it's been sitting amongst someone's collection of peculiar objects for rather longer than it actually has.
There's plenty to appreciate in the detailing, from the overlapping coils to the textured body and carefully shaped open mouth. A brilliant addition to a curiosity cabinet, mineral collection or altar, particularly if your taste leans towards things with a little more character.
About Jasper
Jasper is an opaque, silica-rich stone commonly associated with the chalcedony family. Its varied colours and patterns are influenced by mineral impurities and inclusions, particularly iron-bearing minerals responsible for many of its red, yellow and brown tones.
Its durability and enormous variation in appearance make jasper a popular material for detailed ornamental carvings.
Symbolism & Traditional Associations
Across different cultural traditions, snakes have been associated with transformation, renewal, protection and the cycles of life, partly through their ability to shed their skin.
Within modern crystal and spiritual practice, jasper is traditionally associated with grounding, stability and courage. Together, the stone and serpent form make this an interesting symbolic piece for work centred around change, personal strength and transformation.
These are cultural and metaphysical associations rather than scientifically established properties.
